Tis the Season


Feeling in the holiday spirit yet? It is difficult not to get caught up in the "hustle and bustle" and forget the true meaning of the season which is to look outside ourselves and do something for someone else. All of us at DiCiccio Orthodontics would like to challenge you to take the spirit of the season and carry it with you throughout the coming year. Simple acts of kindness don't cost you a thing but they are priceless (to both the giver and the receiver!). "You don’t need more money to smile more at everyone, or to send thank you note, or to do the little things that let people know they are loved and appreciated", so simply stated by Joan Garbo in her recent blog post.

Feel free to share ideas of simple acts of kindness you are going do to help carry on the spirit throughout the coming year. Wouldn't it be great to have 365 ideas...one for each day next year? We can't wait to start compiling the list.

The holiday season is in full swing and orthodontics may be the last thing on your mind...buried somewhere far below the more immediate and pleasant distraction of menu planning, travel plans, gift-giving budgets and what to get for that special someone. And yet, if orthodontic care is in the cards for you or your child, Dr. DiCiccio and the team want to say that this is one of the best and most important gifts you can give to yourself or a loved one – not to mention one that will far outlast this year’s holiday dinner.


If insurance or FLEX plans come into play, it is definitely time the time to start making plans. You can maximize insurance benefits by starting treatment during this calendar year, allowing next years benefits to kick-in in January. The deadline is also drawing near to set up your FLEX accounts for next year.

Stay Healthy...Replace Your Toothbrush!

Fall is upon us and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. DiCiccio will tell you one of the most important things you can do to avoid becoming reinfected is to replace your toothbrush!


Germs are known to linger on the bristles and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart – keep a spare, just in case! Here are some toothbrush tips that will help you all year long:
  • Wash your hands before and after brushing
  • Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen
  • Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster
  • Prevent germs from being passed between brushes by storing them separately
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long! Studies have shown that a new toothbrush removes 30% more plaque than one that is 3 months old.
  • To help you remember, some brushes have "reminder bristles" that fade over the 3 month period

We are proud to say that because of many generous donations and the over-whelming response to the wristbands, Dr. DiCiccio's Heroes for Hooters came in third in corporate donations in this years Susan G Komen~Race for the Cure on October 29, 2011.  We are ever so grateful to everyone who supported this cause and we can all take pride in this accomplishment!  Please share the day with us by watching this video...

Our first S4L scholarship recipient

We are very excited to introduce our first Smile for a Lifetime-Fresno/Clovis Chapter scholarship recipient!

Smile for a Lifetime is a national, non-profit organization that sponsors the orthodontic care of kids between the ages of 11-17. The mission is to create self-confidence, inspire hope and change the lives of these kids so they can go on to do great things in their local communities. Interested individuals can visit the DiCiccio Orthodontics website for the application and qualification requirements. The completed applications are reviewed by our local Board of Directors and the recipients are chosen. The Board meets on a quarterly basis.


Congratulations Ryan! Welcome to the Smile for a Lifetime family! Enjoy the journey.

October is here...time to see your general dentist!

Dr. DiCiccio and his team want to know... Are you properly brushing and flossing daily during your treatment?

If the answer is yes, that’s great!  But, don’t forget that it is also extremely important for you to visit your general dentist at least every 6 months in addition to brushing your teeth, flossing and coming to your regular visits in our office for your orthodontic adjustments. Regular dental checkups are important for maintaining good oral health, especially during orthodontic treatment!

Why is October a great month to visit your dentist??? Well, not only is it National Orthodontic Health Month, but it is also National Dental Hygiene Month.

Your general dentist will be checking for problems that might not be seen or felt, detect cavities and early signs of decay, treat oral health problems early and encourage you to properly brush and floss your teeth. Your general dentist is part of the team that is going to help you achieve that amazing smile you are working so hard for. 

Don't ignore this important piece of the puzzle!!!

Don't be Tricked, Pick the right Treat

Halloween tends to be one of the busiest times of the year at an  orthodontist's office, primarily because patients indulge in treats that they should not be eating. Those of us at DiCiccio Orthodontics want you to remember that candies and other treats that are hard, chewy, sticky or crunchy can cause damage to braces, clear aligners and other orthodontic appliances. In addition to discomfort, a broken bracket or loose wire may prolong treatment and require additional orthodontic appointments. As part of National Orthodontic Health Month, the AAO is providing orthodontic-friendly Halloween recipes and tips to help patients and their families enjoy the holiday.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) has teamed up with Pam Waterman, author of The Braces Cookbook, to bring orthodontic-friendly recipes and treats to trick-or-treaters and their parents. It’s no trick - these recipes are fun to make, fun to eat, and they won’t put a dent in the smiles of the nearly five million orthodontic patients currently in North America who wear braces, clear aligners or other orthodontic appliances to help them achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.


We suggest that you brush as soon as possible after eating candy, minimizing the impact of the candy on the teeth.  If brushing is not possible, the second best thing is to either consume the candy with a meal (so that the increased saliva produced while eating will help wash the candy off the teeth) or rinse the mouth with water.  In addition, you can chew sugarless gum, especially xylitol gums that help control tooth decay-causing bacteria. It is also better to eat  the candy in one sitting to decrease the amount of time it is in contact with the teeth.
 

We want our patients to have fun while in orthodontic treatment. Cooperation is always key, and exercising caution at Halloween could keep you on the right track to great results!

Happiness and smiles go hand-in-hand! Dr. Pat DiCiccio and team are exceptional at creating beautiful, life-changing smiles. Here are some suggestions for finding the happiness to go along with it! I found this post on A Smile per Day and just had to share it!

Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday. 

Do one thing every day that scares you. 

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.  

Floss.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how. 

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements. 

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.

Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.

Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own. 

Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.

Read the directions, even if you don't follow them. 

Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future. 

Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders. 

Respect your elders.

Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out. 

Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85. 

Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth. 

But trust me on the sunscreen.

Smile for a Lifetime is a national, non-profit organization that provides orthodontic care to individuals who may not have the opportunity to acquire assistance. Launched in 2008, Smile for a Lifetime Foundation aims to reach individuals with financial challenges, special situations, and orthodontic needs. The Foundation sponsors the orthodontic care of hundreds of patients each year. Smile for a Lifetime Foundation has participating orthodontists throughout the US. Each chapter has its own local Board of Directors who choose patients to be treated by the Foundation within their local community.


It is our mission to create self confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our community in a dramatic way. The gift of a smile can do all this for a deserving, under served individual who, in turn, can use this gift to better themselves and our community.

Where did my RETAINERS go???

It is no secret that dogs like to chew on things…. this includes retainers! If you have a dog, never leave your retainers or Invisalign aligners on a table, counter, night stand, or any where they can jump up and snag the appliances. It only takes a few chews to distort or completely destroy them . And if they swallow the sharp pieces of plastic, it can cause serious health issues a for your beloved pet!


Young children seem to be fascinated with them as well. They pick them up out of curiosity and although they may not chew on them like a pet (or sometimes they do!), they tend to drop them wherever they roam, making the retainers hard to find. At DiCiccio Orthodontics we can’t stress enough the importance of taking care of your retainers. Here are some tips on how to keep your appliances out of harms way. Generally speaking, the safest place for retainers is in your mouth!


• Always place your retainers in a CASE when not in your mouth. If you put them in a pocket they can fall out, get bent, broken or end up in the wash and destroyed. If they are loose in your backpack, gym bag, or on a locker shelf, you are asking for them to get bent or broken. If you leave them lying around in the open, it is just an accident waiting to happen!
• Do not wrap the retainers in a napkin while eating at home, school, or a friend’s house. There is a good chance they will end up in the garbage by mistake. It’s a nasty job sifting through garbage for a retainer, especially at school or in a restaurant! YUCK…
• Do not clean the retainers with hot water or boil your retainer to sterilize. It will distort the plastic so they won’t fit and then you must replace them! To clean them, gently scrub them with your toothbrush and some toothpaste at least once a day.
• Take them out when swimming. More than one retainer has ended up lost in the ocean surf, bottom of a lake, or public pool.
• Take them out if you have to vomit. Once you flush, they are gone!
• And the one rule that seems to be most popular…KEEP RETAINERS… AWAY FROM PETS AND SMALL CHILDREN!

Even though your braces are off, your treatment is not complete. Follow the instructions we give when you get the retainers. If you go without wearing your retainers for a prolonged length of time, especially right after the braces are removed, your teeth will begin to move. Most likely, a couple of years down the road we will have you wearing them periodically to make sure things are not shifting.  If you lose or damaged your retainers, contact our office to schedule an appointment to replace them. Maintaining your smile depends on it!

The Search is on...

Spread the word...our board is searching for applicants who are motivated, high-achieving kids, 11-17 years of age, who have definite orthodontic needs but due to special circumstances do not have the ability acquire this care on their own. By creating a positive self-image through a healthy smile, the individuals the foundation serves can maximize their potential and make meaningful contributions to our community.

Dr. DiCiccio and his team look forward to seeing the first orthodontic scholarship applications start pouring through the mail. The press conference was held in late June announcing the start of this awesome opportunity for our community. The application and instructions are available on our office website www.DiCiccioOrtho.com

Over the next year, Dr. DiCiccio will be providing orthodontic care for up to 12 qualified scholarship applicants who have a permanent residence in Fresno or Clovis. If you feel that someone you know might qualify, please have them review the application guidelines on our website. The board will meet on a quarterly basis to determine which candidates may qualify for the scholarships.  

All scholarship applicants must agree to uphold all appointment/scheduling/office guidelines and be willing to "pay it forward" to the community by volunteering 40 hours of their time, over the course of treatment, to a philanthropic organization that we have pre-determined. These organizations include the Saint Agnes Foundation, Assistance League of Fresno, Healthy Smiles, Readying and Beyond and Habitat for Humanity. The community service is a big part of the equation for the scholarship recipients! In return for receiving this life-changing treatment, our foundation feels it is very important for these individuals to realize the needs of others by "paying it forward".

Keep in mind that our longer, more technical appointments are scheduled in the mornings, while our more routine adjustment appointments can be scheduled throughout the day. We have office hours from 7 AM to 5 PM, as well as lunch-time appointments available.

Our COMMITMENT to YOU!

People, communities, organizations and businesses, from time to time, need to evaluate who they are, what they are about and what their roll in life or their community looks like. With this thought in mind, we are excited to share with you a project we have been working on for the past few months.

Our office philosophy has ALWAYS been to deliver outstanding, orthodontic care in a fun, patient-centered environment. By having a smaller, single doctor practice, we can provide more consistent and personalized  treatment for our patients at a more relaxed pace than if we were a larger group or clinic facility. Our highly-skilled team of RDA's and support staff offer our patients individualized care with above and beyond customer service.

We felt that it was important to put OUR COMMITMENT to YOU into words. Over the past several months, our team has spent quite a bit of time refining our Mission Statement to truly reflect our team's vision.

Bookin' it...

Whether or not you are in school, reading will help to keep your mind active. For you students especially, it will help you to keep your skills sharp for the coming year. The entire DiCiccio Orthodontics team believes in the importance of reading and encourages all our patients to find time to sit down with a book this summer.

DiCiccio Orthodontics Father's Day Facebook Contest

Father's Day is almost here!  Show your dad how much you care.  Write a comment on our Facebook wall https://www.facebook.com/DiCiccio.Orthodontics about what your DAD means to you...tell everyone why he is the "Best Dad in the World"!!!  Patients or former patients are eligible to win.  On Monday, June 20th, the DiCiccio Orthodontics team will select the winner.  Please make sure we know who you are when you make your comment so that we can contact you on June 20th.

Movie Night with a Friend!

Our first Movie Night with a Friend event was a huge success! Seven of our in-office guessing contest winners got to invite a friend to attend this premier event held in our very own 16-seat theater. As the winners and their guests arrived they were greeted by a couple of our awesome team members who explained the "rules" for the evening. The rules were there were no rules!!! They could eat ALL the candy, pizza, popcorn, ice cream and soda that they wanted and that they had to have fun! Somehow I don't think these "rules" were too hard to follow.

After getting their fill of delicious Me & Ed's pizza while playing video games...they got their popcorn, candy and soda and filed into the theater to find a seat. Showing on the big screen was Disney's latest animated masterpiece Tangled. What a great movie!

The evening was not over once the movie ended though..good old ice cream sandwiches and drumsticks were served. YUM!!! A contest was held to win one of our awesome, new, insulated, logo cups! Congratulations to our patient Claire for winning. She was very excited as you can see in the picture! The evening was not complete until everyone had gone home with a goodie bag especially for them.

Our next Movie Night with a Friend will be held in July. Be sure to put in your guess when you come in for your appointment. You will definitely want to have a chance to win a "ticket" to Movie Night with a Friend.
